Sweet potatoes have been used instead of dal to make these shakarkand puranpoli. Cardamom powder, nutmeg and saffron are add to the pleasing aroma of these low-fat puranpolis.
This Maharashtrian recipe is also called as Ratale puran poli. A healthy version of the traditional calorie laden puranpolis. Enjoy them with low fat milk or ghee for a sweet ending!
Tips to make sweet potato puranpoli: 1. Instead of sugar you can add jaggery to make puranpoli stuffing. 2. If you wish you can also add grated coconut, it will a nice taste. 3. Milk is used to knead the dough for making soft puran polis.

Ingredients
For The Dough
1/3 cup whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta)
4 tsp low fat milk
To Be Mixed Into A Filling
1/2 cup boiled and grated sweet potato (shakarkand)
4 tsp powdered sugar
1/8 tsp nutmeg (jaiphal) powder
1/8 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder
a pinch of saffron (kesar) strands
Other Ingredients For Sweet Potato Puranpoli
whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta) for rolling
1 tsp oil /
Method
- To make sweet potato puranpoli, combine the wheat flour and milk along with little water and knead into a soft dough.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and keep aside.
- Roll out one portion of the dough into a circle of 75 mm. (3") diameter.
- Place one portion of the filling mixture in the centre of the circle.
- Bring together all the sides in the centre and seal tightly.
- Roll out again into a circle of 125 mm. (5") diameter using whole wheat flour for rolling.
- Heat a non-stick tava (griddle), grease with ghee and cook on a medium flame using little oil till it turns golden brown in colour from both the sides.
- Repeat with the remaining dough and filling to make 3 more puranpolis.
- Serve the sweet potato puranpoli hot.

Put sweet potatoes in enough water and pressure cooker for 3 whistles.

Cool and open lid.

Transfer the sweet potatoes to a thali or plate to cool.

Peel the sweet potatoes with your fingers or use a knife.

Flatten the stuffed dough.

Roll out again into a circle of 125 mm. (5") diameter using whole wheat flour for rolling.

Dust a rolling board with some flour.

Place the uncooked puran poli gently on the tava.

Cook puran poli for 30 to 45 seconds on a medium flame.

Cook the other side the same way and use a spatula to press down to cook puran poli evenly.

Nice low cal version of the regular Puranpoli.

No doubt they don't taste like our regular puranpolis although the texture and the sweetness is so close to the regular puranpoli... that you wont miss the experience... and not to forget that these puranpolis wont leave you feeling guilty, even if you have that one extra poli ..!!!
